چکیده

he short answer is yes. At this oint in time, it seems that the soalled slice wars with regard to the umber of slices provided per comuted tomographic (CT) gantry roation may be reaching a plateau. At he same time, increasing concerns bout radiation dose due to CT exminations are fueling the efforts to educe radiation dose and leading o the beginning of the so-called ose wars. Since 1998, there have been evoutionary advances in multiple-row etector computed tomographic MDCT) technologies, with deand for improved spatial and emporal resolution and 3-D imagng. This has led to rapid competiion among manufacturers as to ho can provide the MDCT scaner that yields the highest number f slices per CT gantry rotation. he slice wars can be traced back to he first 4-slice MDCT scanner that ecame commercially available and linically adopted. For the past 10 ears, the number of CT slices that an be obtained per CT gantry roation has been increasing. It went rom 4 to 16 to 64 to 256 and now o 320 slices. One of the intended oals of the generational evolution n MDCT imaging has been to imge the most challenging organ, the eart. Cardiac imaging, to a large xtent, seems to be the determining u

Radiation dose issues in multi-slice CT scanning ImPACT

Multi-slice or multi-detector row CT scanners, capable of imaging four simultaneous, parallel slices in a single rotation, were first introduced in 1998. Since then, scanners with 6, 8, 10 and 16 slice capabilities have become available and have made a marked impact on the role of CT in the diagnostic radiology department. Most recently 32, 40 and 64 slice scanners have been announced and the t...

Relationship between noise, dose, and pitch in cardiac multi-detector row CT.

In spiral computed tomography (CT), dose is always inversely proportional to pitch. However, the relationship between noise and pitch (and hence noise and dose) depends on the scanner type (single vs multi-detector row) and reconstruction mode (cardiac vs noncardiac). In single detector row spiral CT, noise is independent of pitch. Conversely, in noncardiac multi-detector row CT, noise depends ...

Low kilovolt “prospective ECG-triggering” vs. “retrospective ECG-gating” coronary CTA: comparison of image quality and radiation dose

Background: To compare image quality and radiation doses of low kilovolt (kV) “prospective ECG-triggering” (PT) and standard “retrospective ECG-gating” (RG) coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography. Materials and Methods: A total of 101 consecutive patients (76 males, 25 females; mean age: 55.44 ± 8.28 years) with low-to-intermediate risk status for coronary artery disease and with a body ...

AAPM / RSNA PHYSICS TUTORIAL 1495 AAPM / RSNA Physics Tuto - rial for Residents Physics of Cardiac Imaging with Multiple - Row Detector CT 1

Cardiac imaging with multiple-row detector computed tomography (CT) has become possible due to rapid advances in CT technologies. Images with high temporal and spatial resolution can be obtained with multiple-row detector CT scanners; however, the radiation dose associated with cardiac imaging is high. Understanding the physics of cardiac imaging with multiple-row detector CT scanners allows op...

Multiplanar and 3D imaging of the central airways: comparison of image quality and radiation dose of single-detector row CT and multi-detector row CT at differing tube currents in dogs.

PURPOSE To compare in an animal model the image quality of multiplanar reformation and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction images of the central airways by using single-detector row computed tomography (CT) and multi-detector row CT at varied tube currents and to compare radiation dose. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five dogs each underwent five consecutive helical CT examinations (one single-detec...
